Après-Ski & Early Evening Energy

The day doesn’t end when the ski lifts close for the day. There are serious après ski Queenstown options with over 100 bars and restaurants in just one square kilometre.

For a social atmosphere after a day on the slopes head to one of Queenstown’s lively venues for casual drinks and shared plates. World Bar is one of the best spots for people watching. Snag a table in the courtyard by the fire pit and grab a smash burger accompanied by one of their iconic teapot cocktails or let the local ales flow. Speaking of local brews, craft beer aficionados can also head to Smiths Craft Beer House or Searchlight Brewery. Another cool little spot is Atlas Beer Cafe on Steamer Wharf, full of locals swapping stories after a day on the mountain and chowing down on the famous Atlas steak and chips.

If an refined evening apero is more your speed, head to Toast & Oak, a chic little wine bar on Shotover Street with an eclectic wine list and a considered menu for foodies. Bardeaux has a serious selection of local pinots and a seat by a huge log fire. A little way out of town, at Queenstown Marina, Fino Wine Bar offers a list curated from boutique vineyards in the region and a menu of small sharing plates.

Cocktails are a Queenstown specialty. Visit rooftop bar Sundeck for a cocktail with party vibes by the firepit, accompanied by live tunes. Perky's Floating Bar is a Queenstown nightlife institution, a bar on a boat loved for mulled wine and cocktails. For an unforgettable night panorama, try Nest in Fernhill, one of the highest bar and eateries in Queenstown, with a roaring fire, exceptional cocktails, and a selection of New Zealand boutique gins.

Queenstown Winter Food & Wine Experiences

Winter food in Queenstown is all about fireside dining in cosy restaurants. The town is home to a huge range of restaurants with everything from fine dining to takeaway burger joints.

Seasonal menus feature local produce. Don’t miss wild game – venison, wild goats, and Himalayan thar are all hunted near Queenstown, and as introduced animals, we must keep numbers in check to protect our delicate ecology. Central Otago lamb is perfect for winter braises, and oysters bring a blast of freshness from the wild southern ocean. Citrus is in season; the zing of New Zealand oranges and grapefruit are the perfect counterpoint to rich winter fare. Kūmara, leeks, parsnips, and silver beet add sweet, earthy flavours to the mix.

Here are some of our favourite spots to snuggle up to the fire with a plate of something warming and delicious and a glass of Gibbston pinot or your winter warmer of choice.

The Lodge at Rodd & Gunn is ideal for cosy country club vibes, a welcoming space with leather armchairs by the fire, fur throws, and a menu that ranges through seasonal pastas to bistro classics. Flame Bar and Grill is another space with a roaring fire – the welcoming vibe is enhanced by the smoky, fire-grilled aroma of its South African-inspired  ribs and steaks. For a relaxed plate of pie, bangers and mash, or Irish stew with a pint of Guiness, Pog Mahone’s has fires in both bars and regular trad sessions for local folk musos.

Low light pollution and clear alpine air make the whole region exceptional for stargazing. Queenstown Gardens are a quick stroll away from the centre of town and the south side of the peninsula is a great place to spot stars.
